One of the struggles I’ve heard from SMB Maximo installations is the need and ability to manage the middleware software that runs Maximo. Maximo administrators are at times required to delve into Websphere Application Server (WAS) to mitigate issues or resolve application performance problems. Unfortunately there isn’t a "Websphere for Dummies" book. [1]
The best sources I’ve found for learning more about Websphere is from IBM’s developerWorks site [2] and from IBM PDF guides/manuals. A list of the common resources I use for Maximo 7.1.x are listed below. [3]
- IBM Redbook – WAS v6.1: System Mgmt & Config
- IBM Redbook – WAS v6.1 Problem Determination
- IBM Support – WAS v6.1 Tuning Guide
- IBM developerWorks – Recommended reading list: Java EE and WAS
- IBM devloperWorks – Solving memory problems in WAS
- IBM Eduation Assistant – IBM WAS v6 Support
- IBM Education Assistant – Performance for WAS v6.1
- IBM Education Assistant – Troubleshooting WAS v6.1 JVM
- IBM Support – WAS v6.1 Out of Memory Problem Guide
While some of the information is more than a typical Maximo administrator may need to know about WAS, it is a nice list to keep handy in the event your middleware starts needing some TLC.
So why did I go through all of this? Because I didn’t want to be the same boat as a Maximo admin I overheard at past Pulse conference:[4]
Websphere? That’s that little black box we hope that never breaks.

And if there was such a book, I’d own like 15 copies of it. ↩

An IBM ID is required to access some of these materials. Sign up for an IBM ID is free. ↩

Maximo 6.x uses WAS v6.0 and Maximo 7.5.x uses WAS v7.0. You can adjust your searches accordingly to find documents for versions other than Maximo 7.1.x. ↩
